Meta bets big on AI with custom chips & a supercomputer
Meta is making a big bet on AI by developing custom chips and a supercomputer. The company is developing its own chips called the Meta Training and Inference Accelerator (MTIA), which will be optimized for AI workloads and allow for more efficient training and running of complex models.
In addition, Meta is building a supercomputer, which will be used to train large-scale AI models for natural language processing and computer vision. These investments aim to enable the development of more advanced products and services, such as virtual assistants and augmented reality applications.
Why does this matter?
Meta's move to develop its chips could allow them to train and run more complex AI models more quickly and efficiently, leading to more advanced products and services, such as virtual assistants and augmented reality applications.
ChatGPT in your pocket: OpenAI brings ChatGPT to iPhone
OpenAI has released the ChatGPT app for iOS that allows users to have engaging and personalized conversations with an AI language model. It will sync your conversations, support voice input, and bring the latest model improvements to your fingertips. Also, ChatGPT Plus subscribers get exclusive access to GPT-4’s capabilities, early access to features, and faster response times, all on iOS.
They have started the rollout in the US and are expected to enter additional countries in the coming weeks. OpenAI said: “Android users, you're next!”
Why does this matter?
OpenAI's decision to launch an iOS app version could be seen as a way to broaden the reach of its AI technology and make it more accessible to a broader audience. By tapping into Apple's vast user base, OpenAI can showcase the capabilities of its language model and potentially gain new users.
Knowledge Nugget: The Economics of Building ML Products in the LLM Era
LLMs have indeed brought significant benefits to various domains (such as NLP). However, they have also fundamentally changed the lifecycle and economics of building AI products.
In this thoughtful article,
discusses the three stages in detail that an ML product will go through in its lifecycle as it matures: building applications using APIs first, finetuning the model, and training a custom system. The article also provides a comprehensive overview of the cost, complexities, benefits, challenges, and considerations associated with each stage.
Why does this matter?
While the article discusses how LLMs have transformed the development and deployment of AI products, it also explores ways to improve accuracy, reduce costs, optimize latency, and gain more control over your AI system. With valuable insights, it outlines the economic considerations for decision-making in building ML products today.
