Hugging Face Unveils Open Source Alternative to ChatGPT: HuggingChat
Hugging Face has released HuggingChat, an open-source alternative to OpenAI's ChatGPT, offering users a free AI chatbot experience. Developed by OpenAssistant, a project organized by LAION, HuggingChat is available through a web interface. It can be integrated with existing apps and services via Hugging Face's API. The AI chatbot can perform various tasks, such as writing code, drafting emails, and composing rap lyrics.
Though HuggingChat is open-source, it has some filters to prevent generating dangerous or inappropriate content. However, like other text-generating models, it can derail quickly depending on the questions asked. HuggingChat joins a growing list of open-source alternatives to ChatGPT, such as StableLM, released by Stability AI.
Why does this matter?
OpenAssistant claims they have plans to upgrade the assistant so that it can do a lot of meaningful work. They want it to dynamically research information, use APIs, and cater extremely personalized experiences to users. They intend to make this open tool accessible for all by making it small and efficient enough to run on consumer hardware. If they achieve these ambitious goals, HuggingChat might play a key role in democratizing AI.
NVIDIA Introduces NeMo Guardrails: Open-Source AI Chatbot Security Solution
NVIDIA recently unveiled NeMo Guardrails, an open-source software designed to help developers ensure that AI chatbots powered by large language models (LLMs) stay accurate, appropriate, secure, and on-topic. NeMo Guardrails allows developers to set topical, safety, and security boundaries for AI applications, ensuring that the generated text remains within the desired domain and adheres to the company's safety and security requirements. The software is compatible with all LLMs, including OpenAI's ChatGPT, and can be easily integrated into popular tools like LangChain and Zapier.
The software is part of the NVIDIA NeMo framework, which is available on GitHub. Additionally, it is included in NVIDIA AI Foundations, a suite of cloud services for businesses looking to create and run custom generative AI models based on their proprietary data and domain knowledge.
Why does this matter?
NeMo Guardrails is a significant milestone in the realm of AI safety and security. Particularly as industries increasingly adopt large language models (LLMs) for various applications, such as customer service, document summarization, software development, and drug design. This proactive approach to embedding guardrails in AI systems promotes responsible AI development and fosters trust and dependability in AI-powered applications, which are essential for the widespread adoption and integration of AI technology in various sectors.
MIT's AI Breakthrough: Researchers generate novel proteins using AI
MIT researchers, along with the MIT-IBM Watson AI Lab and Tufts University, have developed machine-learning algorithms capable of generating proteins with specific structural features not found in nature. These novel proteins could be used to create biologically inspired materials with select mechanical properties like stiffness or elasticity. The researchers adapted a generative model, similar to the architecture used in AI systems like DALL-E 2, to predict amino acid sequences that achieve specific structural objectives.
The machine-learning system can generate millions of proteins in a matter of days, providing scientists with a vast array of ideas to explore. The researchers developed two models: one that operates on the overall structural properties of the protein and another that operates at the amino acid level. Both models work by combining amino acid structures to generate proteins that meet structural design targets. The team plans to experimentally validate some of the new protein designs in a lab.
Why does this matter?
The development holds significant potential for various industries. By enabling the creation of biologically inspired materials with desired mechanical properties, these new proteins could potentially replace petroleum-based or ceramic materials, reducing the carbon footprint and addressing pressing sustainability concerns. This innovative AI-driven approach also accelerates the discovery process, opening up new possibilities for applications in food, health, medicine, and materials design and ultimately contributing to tackling major societal challenges.
