Let’s go!
AI takes center stage at Google I/O 2023
Google has been heavily investing in AI for years and has made significant strides in the technology. So, given the recent AI boom, it should be no surprise that Google went all in on AI at the I/O 2023 conference. And this time, Google’s AI innovations are attempting to make AI more helpful for businesses, developers, people, and everyone.
Below is a list of all the game-changing announcements made at Google I/O 2023.
Introducing PaLM 2
PaLM 2 is Google’s state-of-the-art, next-generation language model with improved multilingual, reasoning, and coding capabilities. It will power over 25 new products and features, bringing the latest in advanced AI capabilities directly into its products and to people.
PaLM 2 will also be faster and more efficient than previous models. And it will be available in four sizes– Gecko, Otter, Bison, and Unicorn(smallest to largest)– which makes it easy to deploy for a wide range of use cases.
Gemini’s upcoming release
Google has combined its Brain and DeepMind research teams to create Gemini– its next multimodal model built from the ground up. It will be highly efficient at tool and API integrations, and built to enable future innovations, like memory and planning.
While it's still in training, Gemini is already exhibiting multimodal capabilities never before seen in prior models. And like PaLM 2, it will be available in various sizes and capabilities to ensure deployment across different products, applications, and devices.
New updates to Bard
Google moved Bard to PaLM 2, which enabled many improvements.
Bard opens up to over 180 countries and territories, in 40 new languages, ending the waitlist. Thanks to PaLM 2’s improved multilingual capabilities.
Bard will become more visual both in its responses and your prompts and will also use Google Lens.
Incorporating developers’ feedback, Bard to have coding upgrades, including source citations, dark theme, and export features.
Bard will integrate capabilities of Google apps and services you already use— Docs, Drive, Gmail, etc.
Search gets an AI makeover
In its latest update, Search uses generative AI to give you more information and context to your searches. For instance, you can ask a question like “what's better for a family with kids under 3 and a dog, bryce canyon or arches.” It saves you from multiple searches, sorting through the vast information available, and piecing things together yourself.
Other updates include AI-assisted shopping, wider range of sources, and more. You can sign up today to test all the latest features!
Announcing Studio Bot, an AI-powered coding assistant
Google introduced an AI-powered conversational experience called Studio Bot that leverages Codey, Google's foundation model for coding that is a descendant of PaLM 2. It will help generate code for apps and make developers more productive.
For instance, you can ask questions to learn more about Android development or help fix errors in your existing code — all without ever having to leave Android Studio.
Google Workspace gets generative AI features
Google Workspace is adding more AI-powered features, making it more efficient and user-friendly. Sheets will now automatically generate tables, and Slides and Meet will create images based on your text input and the ability to request a specific visualization to be created. Smart Reply in Gmail will suggest you the responses to emails. Google is constantly adding new features to make its productivity suite even more powerful and user-friendly.
DuetAI: AI assistant for cloud developers
Google Cloud has launched Duet AI, an AI-powered collaborator designed to help cloud developers build and onboard new cloud applications more easily. The AI collaborator can provide code recommendations, generate full functions and code blocks, identify vulnerabilities and errors in the code, and suggest fixes. It also allows users to engage with chat assistance for real-time guidance on various topics.
Duet AI for AppSheet enables users to create intelligent business applications without coding. The new features are available today for limited users, and Google Cloud plans to expand access soon.
ML Hub to train & deploy AI models
Google announced ML Hub, a one-stop destination for developers who want to get more guidance on training and deploying their ML models. It provides various resources, including tutorials, code samples, and documentation, to help developers start with ML. It also includes a community forum where developers can ask questions and get help from other developers.
The platform is still in beta, but Google plans to add more features and resources.
Google+Adobe = Bard+Firefly
Google and Adobe announced a partnership to bring art generation capabilities to Bard. It will allow Bard users to generate images via Firefly, Adobe's recently introduced collection of AI models for generating media content. Firefly will become the “premier generative AI partner” for Bard.
This step is Google's broader effort to make Bard more useful for creative tasks. In addition, it will also be able to translate languages, write different kinds of creative content, and answer your questions in an informative way.
Why does this matter?
Google made a bold statement with a flurry of advanced AI innovations. Until now, it seemed like Microsoft and OpenAI were going to take over the mainstream AI space. But Google’s impressive line of AI products has everyone thinking about the AI leader yet again.
Google also holds a strategic advantage of having a large user base on the platform already. If their AI tools are as helpful as they claim to be, then it won’t take much long before Google becomes the preferred AI companion of many. Much like how it’s the preferred search, map, browsing, etc. option of many at the moment.
Hugging Face's latest feature makes Machine Learning more user-friendly
Hugging Face has launched a new feature called Transformers Agents, which enables users to control more than 100,000 HF models through text, images, video, audio, and documents. This feature breaks down the barrier to entry for machine learning and makes it more accessible to all.
Why does this matter?
This will make it easy for people with limited machine-learning knowledge to leverage these models' power for various applications. As a result, individuals and businesses can save time, effort, and money by incorporating machine learning into their workflows without extensive training or hiring specialized personnel.
