DeepMind and Google Brain Teams Merge to accelerate AI developments
DeepMind, the AI company acquired by Google in 2015, is joining forces with Google Research’s Brain team to create a single AI-focused unit called Google DeepMind. The combined talents and efforts of the two teams will accelerate the development of more capable AI systems that solve the biggest challenges facing humanity.
The CEO of DeepMind, Demis Hassabis, will lead the new unit, working closely with Eli Collins and Zoubin Ghahramani who will be joining his leads team as VP of Product and the research leadership team, respectively.
Why does this matter?
The merger will bring together world-class talent in AI with the computing power, infrastructure, and resources to create the next generation of AI breakthroughs and products across Google and Alphabet. And more importantly can give Alphabet an edge in the AI war.
Zalando turns to ChatGPT to make an AI fashion assistant
Zalando, an online retailer, is launching an AI assistant for its app and web platforms powered by ChatGPT, allowing users to navigate its catalogue in a more intuitive way using their own words and fashion terms. The assistant will be available in a beta version to select customers in Ireland, Germany, the UK, and Austria. Zalando expects the assistant to understand specific details based on user sentences and eventually deliver a more personalised result by combining user preferences with its understanding of fashion.
The company aims to enhance customers' shopping experiences and is committed to understanding their needs and preferences better. The adoption of ChatGPT by various companies has resulted in an AI arms race, with other tech giants working on their own generative AI systems to compete.
Why does this matter?
The use of AI like ChatGPT in e-commerce could facilitate more seamless and personalized user experiences, potentially increasing customer satisfaction and loyalty over time.
Moderna, IBM to explore Generative AI and Quantum Computing for mRNA vaccines
Moderna and IBM are partnering to advance mRNA technology using generative AI and quantum computing, which could speed up Moderna's discovery and creation of new messenger RNA vaccines and therapies. Moderna's scientists will have access to IBM's generative AI model known as MoLFormer, which will help understand the characteristics of potential mRNA medicines and design a new class of vaccines and therapies.
This agreement comes as Moderna is trying to harness its mRNA technology to target other diseases, while IBM is ramping up its investment in AI with new partnerships, largely driven by the release of OpenAI's ChatGPT.
Why does this matter?
The use of quantum computing and AI could help Moderna accelerate the discovery and creation of these new vaccines and therapies by solving problems too complex for traditional computers. The development of these new medicines could potentially benefit the general public by providing more treatment options for a range of diseases.
