Elon Musk’s xAI launches Grok, its ChatGPT rival
Elon Musk just unveiled his ChatGPT competitor, Grok, an AI modeled after the Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy. Here’s what sets it apart:
Intended to answer almost anything and, far harder, even suggest what questions to ask!
Designed to answer questions with a bit of wit and has a rebellious streak
Real-time knowledge of the world via the 𝕏 platform. So, it will also answer spicy questions that are rejected by most other AI systems.
Grok is still a very early beta product, made with only 2 months of training and it will improve rapidly in the coming weeks. Its powering engine, Grok-1, displayed strong results with 63.2% on the HumanEval coding task and 73% on MMLU.
Why does this matter?
Grok seems impressively efficient, with just training on 33B parameters over two months. Its stand-out personality might also make it sound the most human-like from the other chatbots we have seen.
But it is definitely way behind ChatGPT-4 and will take much work to catch up to ChatGPT-4-level capabilities. While xAI claims it will improve rapidly, only time will tell if it can really compete with ChatGPT.

OpenAI's huge ChatGPT updates leak ahead of DevDay
Leaks ahead of OpenAI DevDay, its developer conference tomorrow, suggest big updates are coming to ChatGPT. These include a new interface for ChatGPT and completely new features.
Custom chatbots via Gizmo: The tool will specialize in creating, managing, and selecting custom chatbots. There will also be a Magic Creator or Magic Maker to help you create the chatbots.
Workspace and team plan: OpenAI may also be introducing new enterprise subscriptions and a “Team Plan”. With different pricing plans, it will give abilities to update Workspace metadata such as role, department, etc., external systems integrations (CRM, ERP), internally shareable chat templates, and more.
"context connectors" to Google Drive and Microsoft 365: These will allow you to connect apps to access their information in ChatGPT.
Some other rumors include GPT-4 API price reduction, speed improvement, token 32K general access, and more.
Why does this matter?
If the leaks are true, OpenAI's first developer conference could be the biggest AI event of 2023. The updates indicate that OpenAI is making it faster, cheaper, and more seamless for businesses and developers to build AI-based applications. OpenAI might again become a pioneer in advancing AI technology and accessibility.
RunwayML introduces the first AI physical device for video
RunwayML is introducing 1stAI Machine, the first physical device for video editing generated by AI.
It is anticipated to match the quality of videos with that of photos. “At that point, anyone will be able to create movies without the need for a camera, lights, or actors; they will simply interact with the AIs. A tool like 1stAI Machine anticipates that moment by exploring tangible interfaces that enhance creativity.”
Why does this matter?
While the 1stAI Machine offers a unique and exciting shift in the way we engage with AI, it seems technology has come a full circle, marking a return to analog interfaces in today’s highly digital-centric age. What’s next, AI synthesizers creating music?

How AI will stack up to past technology revolutions?
This article by
provides a thought-provoking perspective on the ongoing AI revolution, comparing it to previous technological shifts and offering insights into what the future might hold in terms of innovation and transformation in AI.The internet, mobile, and cloud looked like their own distinct revolutions– but rather, they may have been sub-revolutions in the broader Information Age that’s dominated the last 50 years of capitalism.
AI is bigger, a more fundamental shift in technology’s evolution.
Why does this matter?
The article highlights the unique position of AI in the current technological landscape. It helps explore the potential and opportunities for startups in the field of AI. It also emphasizes the importance of choosing the right AI-focused areas for investment and development.
What Else Is Happening❗
🍏Apple CEO Tim Cook confirmed working on generative AI technologies.
On Apple’s Q4 earnings call with investors, Tim Cook pushed back a bit at the notion that the company was behind in AI. He highlighted that technology developments Apple had made recently would not be possible without AI. Apple deliberately labels features based on their consumer benefits, but the fundamental technology behind them is AI/ML. (Link)
🧠Chinese AI pioneer Kai-Fu Lee’s startup to create an OpenAI equivalent for China.
The startup, 01.AI, has reached a valuation of $1B+ in just 8 months. Its first model, Yi-34B, a bilingual (English and Chinese) open base model significantly smaller than models like Falcon-180B and Meta LlaMa2-70B, came in first amongst pre-trained LLM models on HF leaderboard. Its next proprietary model will be benchmarked on with GPT-4. (Link)
🚀Eleven Labs released its fastest text-to-speech model, Eleven Turbo v2.
Its audio generation speed is ~400ms. Available in English, it is optimized to keep smooth and natural sound quality while providing rapid experience. (Link)
📜Together AI releases RedPajama v2, the largest open dataset with 30 Trillion tokens.
The vast online dataset dedicated to learning-based ML systems. The team believes it can be used as a foundation for extracting high-quality datasets for LLM training and the foundation for in-depth study into LLM training data. High-quality data are essential to the success of SoTA open LLMs like Llama, Mistral, and Falcon. (Link)
🤫PepsiCo’s Doritos brand creates technology to ‘silence’ its crunch during gaming.
Gamer’s crunching distracts other gamers from playing well and impacts performance. So, Doritos is debuting “Doritos Silent”, which used AI and ML to analyze more than 5k different crunch sounds. When turned on, it detects the crunching sounds and silences it while keeping the gamer’s voice intact. (Link)
