Let’s go
AI can now ‘decode’ your thoughts into text.
Researchers at the University of Texas at Austin have developed an AI-based decoder called ‘Semantic decoder’ that can translate the gist of what people think into text without requiring invasive techniques.
The decoder accurately reconstructed speech while people listened to a story or imagined one using only fMRI scan data. They fed this data into GPT 1, which narrowed down the responses until they reached the closest response.
Why does this matter?
This AI decoder may help people who are mentally conscious yet unable to speak physically, such as those who struggle to communicate due to a stroke or motor neuron disease. This Semantic decoder is technically impressive and could open up new experimental possibilities.
Microsoft’s Bing AI becomes the default AI tool for Samsung Galaxy devices
Samsung Galaxy device users now have access to Microsoft SwiftKey's latest Bing AI feature, whether they want it or not. The Bing AI update, which was launched for iOS and Android in mid-April, is now being added to the built-in SwiftKey keyboard in Samsung's One UI. This integration means that virtually every Galaxy device will have Bing AI installed
Microsoft's Bing AI integrates with the SwiftKey digital keyboard app in three major ways: Search, Chat, and Tone.
Why does this matter?
Microsoft is aggressively going for user acquisition to achieve market monopoly. We could soon see similar steps being taken by Google and other tech giants to make their AI the preferred go-to intelligence tool for users.
Researchers teach AI to improve memory through note-taking.
A recent paper showcased how LLMs can increase contextual memory and apply multi-step reasoning through self-notes. The primary difference between this model and other scratchpad approaches is that the model can deviate from the input context at any time to think explicitly.
The model writes down multiple notes as it reads each context statement and, in turn, develops the ability to apply logical reasoning.
Why does this matter?
The popular AI models cannot perform optimally over longer sequences, and the proposed model tackles the issue. The self-notes technique allows it to question and answer multiple sub-questions, leading to thinking and reasoning. Such AI models can find widespread use cases in areas where decisions are to be made considering a long series of facts.
Knowledge Nugget: The History of AI in 7 Experiments
In this detailed and insightful piece,
takes you through the evolution of AI through 7 experiments conducted around AI. The earliest experiment (Logic Theorist) goes all the way back to 1955.The article also gives insight into how the common perception with regard to AI changed over time and how even the brightest of ideas don’t get mainstream if it’s not the right time. We recommend diving into this article over a cup of morning coffee or with your preferred beverage. 😊
Why does this matter?
While AI, as a niche, exploded fairly recently for the world, it’s interesting to see how it has evolved over a period of nearly 7 decades. You get to witness how small breakthroughs back then led to essentially a potential new world order. It also reminds us not to discount ideas at face value.
