NVIDIA's New AI and Simulation Tools Advance Robotics 

At the Conference for Robot Learning (CoRL) in Munich, Germany, NVIDIA revealed new simulation tools and workflows that will benefit robotics developers who wish to accelerate work on AI-enabled robots. 

Here’s a quick glance at what those are: 

• Issac Lab: An open-source unified robot learning framework applicable to humanoids, quadrupeds, or cobots that handle complex movements. Developers can use it to train robot policies at scale. 

• Project GR00T: A six-workflow initiative that equips humanoid developers with blueprints to develop accelerated libraries, foundation models, and data pipelines to build challenging humanoid robot capabilities. 

• NVIDIA Cosmos tokenizers: Efficient, high-quality encoding and decoding to simplify the development of AI world models. 

• NVIDIA NeMo Curator: Library streamlining curation with automatic pipeline orchestration, supporting linear scaling across multi-node, multi-GPU systems. 

Why does it matter?

NVIDIA has democratized robotics research by providing powerful tools like Isaac Lab and Project GR00T. Developers will significantly benefit from this as it’ll save their time and effort in creating sophisticated AI-enabled robots.

Mistral levels up with new moderation API 

The startup’s newly launched content moderation API, powered by Ministral 8B, is trained to classify texts across multiple languages, including English, French, and German, into nine categories, such as sexual, hate and discrimination, violence and threats, and more. 

The moderation API can be applied to raw and conversational texts, and the company claims it to be highly accurate. 

Why does it matter?

The model emphasizes the importance of multilingual, nuanced moderation—something not all AI models can handle well—positioning Mistral as a strong competitor in the AI ethics and moderation.

World’s first humanoid robot artist sells art at auction 

A painting made my Ai-Da, a humanoid robot of the eminent World War Two codebreaker Alan Turing, has sold for $1,084,800. The sale has set a new auction benchmark for an artwork of  a humanoid robot. 

The event further marks an important milestone for visual arts, establishing the auction benchmark for an artwork by a humanoid robot. 

Why does it matter?

With Beatles’ song Now and Then making history as the first AI-assisted song nominated for a Grammy, Ai-Da’s success highlights the role of AI in creative fields, challenging developers to consider ethical and philosophical questions about creativity, authorship, and the role of machines in human-driven art.

X opens Grok for free public testing 

Only available to its premium users until now, xAI has opened access to its chatbot Grok to users for free. As of now, the Grok-2 model only supports 10 queries per two hours, while the Grok-2 mini supports 20 queries per two hours and three image analysis questions per day. 

By opening up  Grok to users for free, xAI may be aiming for a more significant user base and a faster feedback cycle for its products. Currently, users in New Zealand are able to access the chatbot for free. 

Why does it matter?

This move not only refines Grok’s capabilities by exposing it to a diverse set of user queries, it also positions xAI to compete more effectively with major players in conversational AI, like OpenAI's ChatGPT and Google's Bard.

Anthropic and Palantir team up with AWS to serve US defense

Anthropic and Palantir have partnered with Amazon Web Services (AWS) to offer U.S. intelligence and defense agencies access to the Claude 3 and 3.5 AI models. The companies have received the Defense Information Systems Agency (DISA) IL6 accreditation, requiring some of the strictest security protocols.

The partnership improved intelligence analysis, quicker decision-making, streamlined tasks, and enhanced operational efficiency across US Defense and Intelligence departments.

Why does it matter?

This move highlights the rising demand for AI solutions that integrate into regulated environments. With Meta open-sourcing LLaMA for U.S. agencies, developers face pressure to create similarly secure and scalable AI tools for both private and government sectors.

Knowledge Nugget: Creating artificial intelligence that acts more human by knowing that it knows

discusses how researchers from Nagoya University have made significant progress towards creating neural networks with metamemory capabilities. He further examines how, in an evolutionary computer experiment, they developed a model that displayed meta-cognitive behaviors similar to those seen in monkeys.

Daniel mentions that by evolving the ability to evaluate their own memories, these AI systems learned to adaptively decide whether to attempt memory-based tasks or opt for a safer, smaller reward when uncertain.

🎨 Microsoft launches new AI features for Paint, such as generative fill and generative erase, including a rewrite feature for Notepad. 

🚀 Qwen releases three new Qwen 2.5 open-source coder series, each with six models: Qwen2.5-Coder (0.5B/1.5B/3B/7B/14B/32B). 

🍎 Apple rolls out iOS 18.2 beta 3 with intelligent features like Genmoji, Image Playground, Siri ChatGPT integration, Writing Tools, Visual Intelligence, and Image Wand.

⚙️ OpenAI purchases Chat.com domain, previously owned by Hbuspot CTO Dharmesh Shah, for an undisclosed price. The domain redirects users to the ChatGPT website. 

📣 Nous Research has announced the launch of its user-facing chatbot, Nous Chat with reasoning enhancements, new models, experimental capabilities, and more. 

🖥️ New AI startup Panjaya uses deepfake technology in its new tool to recreate a speaker’s original voice in a new language by mimicking physical movements to match speech patterns. 

📝 OpenAI’s VP of research and safety, Lilian Weng, has called it quits. Her departure is the latest in a long string of AI safety and policy researchers to leave the company.

🌟 Google launches a new AI tool, LearnAbout, built on the LearnLM AI model, that provides answers with visual and interactive elements with educational formatting.

📱 Google debuts a standalone Gemini app for iOS, named ‘Google Gemini’, currently available in select regions in the iOS app store.

📦 Amazon might make another multi-billion dollar investment in an AI startup called Anthropic, according to sources. The investment would allow its customers to get early access to the Anthropic technology.
